#61 Weekend reads – and the Northern Hemisphere cooks

If you’re like me, you’ve been transfixed by the news of the unrelenting heat wave hitting Canada, with record temperatures killing hundreds from heat related issues, as well as setting off fires that are destroying whole towns.

And we all know this heat wave is extending well beyond Canada. The US is experiencing intense heat, but so is Europe, Russia, and the Arctic is burning up too – which is of huge concern, because it is here we release the methane dragon – a gas 86 times more potent than carbon. We are inching ever closer to this reality, and the impact of this, well it’s too frightening to know. Let’s just say we can expect uncontrollable climate change, and it will happen fast, not slow.

Some heat news

A Scorcher in Siberia and Europe

Heat wave in Russia brings record-breaking temperatures north of Arctic Circle

Another significant heat wave enters West Coast forecast

Heat waves, storms and drought: The Northern Hemisphere summer is off to a wild start

But then we have some deeper commentary

Heatwave causing ‘biggest glacier melt in Washington state in a century’.

Or this one As a climate scientist, I know the knock-on effects of heatwaves like these — and we need to act urgently.

Or even this one Canadian inferno: northern heat exceeds worst-case climate models.

Are we getting the message yet?
