18 Steps to an All-Star LinkedIn Profile made it to the Best LinkedIn Books of All Time

My friend POH Cheng-Boon tagged me in a post on LinkedIn, where I discovered 18 Steps to an All-Star LinkedIn Profile had been included in Book Authorities 22 Best New LinkedIn eBooks To Read In 2021. I thought wow, very cool! A nice early birthday present.

Then I clicked through to dig a bit deeper – because I had no idea this was even a thing – and found it was also listed under the category 100 Best LinkedIn Books of All Time. Even cooler. Thank you Book Authority.

A bumpy start

I launched this book right at the start of the pandemic, which means literally when everything was turning upside down and we were all starting to acknowledge we were facing a very rough ride. As you could expect from a launch perspective, it was a disaster.

I didn’t worry about it though. I couldn’t. Much bigger issues were playing out around the world and my attention shifted there. I also made the book free for a couple of months, hoping to help people going through job loss and uncertainty. Even though that didn’t feel like a huge contribution, I was happy to do what I could to help. Always am.

It’s felt like a unique position for new authors this year. I won’t speak for everyone else, but I haven’t been able to market the book very well, mainly because I couldn’t even get it in the post. Not to mention, when I first got the books, I couldn’t even go to a post office myself!!

I have a podcaster in India wanting to interview me, but I can’t get a book to them and they want a hard copy. I tried again last week – still no mail to India. Did you know you still can’t post everywhere? Such strange times.

And book shops. I haven’t even started there. They’ve all been closed!! Yes, not a good start. Even digitally marketing the book has been hard, with the early months after launch seeing any unnecessary items through Amazon closed down. Definitely a strange time to be a new author.

Thank YOU

Which means I’m delighted the book made these two lists and it really is because of the incredible people in my community who bought the book and then shared their happiness on social media, or wrote a review on Amazon.

These lists are all data driven, so that is how it made it there – because of you! I know there are many ways to “game” the system and I have no issue with what other people do. I just can’t “win” this way.

I know it sounds old-fashioned, but if it’s worthy, it will make it. If it’s not, it won’t. My path will always take longer because of this value, but it is who I am. If you know me, you’ll know how important that is to me.

So a HUGE thank you to everyone who helped get my book on these two lists. Legends, all of you.

Help your author pals this year

Which makes me want to finish this post by asking everyone to please, support authors. If you have a friend who has published a book, buy it and then write a review on Amazon. I know everyone is always busy, with so much going on, but a few moments of effort can make a huge impact on someone’s ability to succeed.

This is all part of the #GivingEconomy. Be a part of this generous, vibrant community, where we are all working towards our goals, but we do it by helping other people achieve their goals too.

Right now, we need to help each other, in every way that matters. So many are facing hard times and painful uncertainty. Let’s focus on community. It matters.

From a digital point of view, here’s some things you can do – for authors and for your wider community:

  1. Write reviews on Amazon – even if you don’t know the author. Make it a next step for every book you read
  2. Share your friends books and other books you love on social media and tell your community about it
  3. Write a reference for people you care about on LinkedIn – former colleagues, bosses, peers, etc…
  4. Tick the skills on your communities LinkedIn profiles – once skills pass 99+ endorsements, it really helps people be seen as an expert (video on skills below)
  5. Comment on blogs that are meaningful to you – start a conversation and don’t be a lazy liker
  6. Share your colleagues, peers or friends blogs, videos or podcasts that really resonate with you. Help them build their audience, especially if you believe in their message

If you give, you will receive, but it’s the giving that is the privilege of the digital age. Let’s give more to each other in 2021 and help each other through this time.

Oh and because it’s almost my birthday, can you do me a favour? If you are working and doing OK financially, can you make a donation to the UN Refugee Program or World Food Program? Economists believe 2021 will be worse for those in extreme poverty or facing famine. Let’s do what we can to ensure no one starves.

If you want to catch up on all of the environment news for 2020, please click here – Environment reference materials and articles from 2020 – constantly updating – I’ll start a new one for 2021.

And with that I want to say thank you to everyone in my community who has been so amazing to me – as friends, peers, mentors, supporters, ears when I’ve needed them, shoulders too, and so much more.

It’s been a terribly challenging year, but we can make it. We can come through this pandemic. We will be permanently changed from 2020, but the gifts in this time have been remarkable and I hope we have the courage to face 2021 with new resolve and hope to create a better world for all.

Cheers

Andrea
