Weekend reads

#11 Weekend reads – greetings from Northern Thailand

I’m a little late getting my weekend reads out because it’s time for a change of scenery after months in lockdown. How can I get out in the middle of a pandemic you might ask? Well I live in Thailand and it’s been seven weeks since any cases of community transmission.

That said, we’re not out of the woods, with recent reports of travellers arriving with it, as well as a diplomat, but it was quickly contained. Thailand has done a superb job in dealing with this pandemic, and while economically it’s been ravaged, it’s great to be living in a place that has it under control.

Thailand was the country with the first reported infection outside of China, which meant we went into quarantine early, however, as the weeks rolled on and the hospitals weren’t filling with COVID19 patients, we were all a little confused. Why isn’t it taking off? Is it the heat? Culture? Genetics? It appears no one is sure.

Why has the pandemic spared the Buddhist parts of South-East Asia?

I just feel very fortunate to be living here in this time, and it’s a privilege to have the opportunity to explore the North of Thailand for the next couple of weeks with my family. It’s stunning up here – highly recommend when this is all over.

Charity: If you are able, can you donate to the UN Refugee Program and World Food Program? We have 30 million facing famine and 100 million have sunk into extreme poverty since this pandemic started. Let’s help the organizations doing the most to address these challenges. Taking care of our fellow humans is so important.

I published What’s an Infodemic? How do you manage it? this week. If you’re struggling with the information overload of this time, I hope these tips help.
