#202 Weekend Reads – holding my breath, you too?

I’m heading to the American Chamber of Commerce US Election Watch Event on Wednesday in Singapore, and if it proceeds as normal (2020 was an anomaly) we will know the results by about lunchtime in Asia. I stand very firm in my belief that we will be seeing the first female President of the United States, and I can’t wait for that to be confirmed. In the meantime, I’m holding my breath – you too?

Why so confident you ask? I listed my reasoning in last week’s Weekend Reads, and watching what’s happened since then, I know women voters will be the biggest difference to the outcome. They are not happy with the potential of a Trump presidency and are voting in bigger numbers than men so far. Women always decide the US Election and it has been the case for a couple of decades.

As an aside, I saw one interview of an elderly lady, proudly voting for Kamala Harris and she said it’s the first time she’s voting, because her husband has now died. Apparently, he never allowed her to vote. Ugh!

However, the other big change since I wrote that list, is the insult to Puerto Ricans and the wider Latino community saying they will vote Democrat. This matters in swing states like Pennsylvania, which has a large Puerto Rican community, and when previous year’s elections come down to tens of thousands of votes, let’s remember that there are half a million Puerto Ricans living in Pennsylvania – that’s a large block of voters to insult.

Add to that the number of Republicans voting for Harris. This swing is real.

Another interesting article in The Atlantic, it discusses how there are many people in the US who ignore election news and social media completely, right up until the week before the election. It is only then they look at the candidates and make their decision.

Can you imagine what they’re seeing right now? I’d suggest these undecided voters might be considering a Harris Presidency? How could they not? Here’s a sample of the insanity of Donald Trump and his sycophants in the last week.

Compare all of that with the very Presidential speech by Kamala Harris, on the same spot Trump incited the January 6th riots.

There will be chaos after the election, regardless – Election Fraud Conspiracy Theories Are Already Thriving Online | WIRED – however with states like Florida and Texas actually in the running to go blue (wouldn’t that be something?), it could be so unanimous MAGA finally skulk off and lick their wounds. That would be the ideal outcome, although many expect violence.

As you can probably tell, I’m not impressed with the hateful, divisive, misogynistic, racist messages coming out of the GOP. It makes me sick to my soul that we have so many people like this in the world.

Anyhoo, please do remember we have a much bigger crisis on our hands, and boy we need to get moving. Some worthwhile reads/watches:
