#29 Weekend reads – hope and deep sadness

Does anyone else feel two moods in the world right now? On the one hand, there is hope, with two promising vaccines in human trial and applications for approval in motion. This is as well as other solutions coming forward, like my friend Jerome Boyd-Kirkup, PhD, who is the Chief Scientific Officer and co-founder of Hummingbird Bioscience. They received approval to start human trials for the HMBD-115, a COVID-19 Monoclonal Antibody. Congrats Jerome and team. I have such clever friends.

You can learn more here: Hummingbird Bioscience’s antibody therapy trial is part of anti-Covid-19 effort, says co-founder. Thanks for sending the Link Amber!

And then deep sadness. With the festive season approaching, we have some bleak months ahead. Yes the relentlessness continues. I feel so much pain and heartache coming through social media, but the people I ache for the most, are the doctors, nurses and frontline workers who must all be completely exhausted by now. So many have died too! Can you even imagine what it is like for them?

And it’s not going to calm down anytime soon. The US has passed 250,000 deaths, with 1,300 dying a day. India has more than 130,000 dead and it’s hospitals are near capacity, in Mexico they’ve hit 100,000 dead, and in Europe, the death rate from COVID-19 is three times higher than the US. Read this article – The US could be on track to hit 1 million daily coronavirus cases by the end of 2020, a new report finds – those on the front line will not be getting a break anytime soon. Please just do the right thing for them!!

We’ve all been through a lot this year, with different levels of impact depending on where we are, but as this monster rages on, people are starting to understand that they cannot and should not bring families together to celebrate. The message is clear, if you don’t hold back this year, people at your table in 2020 will not be there in 2021. Of course, in the US, we know many will ignore this, and with COVID-19 moving into a devastating phase in much of the Northern Hemisphere, sorrow is certain to follow. It is very sad.

Obviously this is striking into the heart of the US right now, with Thanksgiving around the corner. But as we move towards the Christmas season, many of us will feel it too. We have a cure on the horizon, but it will be at least 12 months before we know we’ll have any level of control in regards to the pandemic. It’s so hard on so many and really, all that is required is: everyone does the necessary at the same time for as long as is needed to get it under control in the country or community they live in. Yet still so many resist. And those who have done the right thing, especially the elderly, are suffering this resistance.

Some hope emerged in recent weeks and if you have Hindu friends, you would have seen their beautiful, smaller gatherings happening all around the world, as they celebrated Diwali or Deepavali – the festival of light. According to Wikipedia, and my friends: Diwali symbolizes the spiritual victory of light over darkness, good over evil, and knowledge over ignorance. Meaningful for our time, no? Take hope from their love for the world and their smaller celebrations – which were no less beautiful.

A somber time, a heartbreaking time, but we will get through, we will. Keep the faith my friends. Keep the faith and get creating.
