#194 Weekend Reads – imagine being called a useful idiot?

What a career goal, you’re working hard for years, earning a LOT of money, and then you find out your “employer” is the Russian Government, and they think of you as a useful idiot. That was the big, breaking news this week, whenThe United States Department of Justice released a new indictment – Office of Public Affairs | Two RT Employees Indicted for Covertly Funding and Directing U.S. Company that Published Thousands of Videos in Furtherance of Russian Interests | United States Department of Justice.

Some worthwhile reads on the story so far:

FYI – know your influencers and most importantly, know who’s paying them!

One good part of this story is election interference is usually something we learn about after elections. This time, the FBI got it out before the November US Elections. I just hope it matters, because if Donald Trump wins, this is what it will mean for the world: If Trump wins the election, it will doom our efforts to slow climate disaster | US elections 2024 | The Guardian.

Some other breaking news this week is scientists are 90% sure that 2024 will be even hotter than 2023, and 2023 was the hottest year in the last 125,000 years. Here’s a piece on that: Hottest summer on record could lead to warmest year ever measured | Climate crisis | The Guardian

Or a video if you prefer watching rather than reading:

A common phrase you will hear, if you haven’t already, is the climate crisis is a food crisis. Here’s a couple of reads on where we are with that:

But we DID get some good news in the agricultural space from the EU this week – Agriculture report could signal dramatic change in EU farm subsidies | Euronews. Consensus matters, as well as having everyone at the table. Nice work EU.

Civil war doesn’t help food security either and Sudan is on the brink  – – Sudan on verge of ‘worst famine in the world’ as civil war continues | BBC News. A shocking situation, that is barely getting the world’s attention. Sexual violence is off the charts too. When it comes to the state of the world, we must stop all war, especially now.

Recently I’ve been sharing stories about the media reckoning that has begun, with people of integrity standing up and saying enough. Regardless of what you think about the media, it is an essential pillar of healthy democracy, and we must do all we can to change this trajectory. It will destroy us if we don’t get a handle on what is happening with the world’s media.

On The Know Show I was talking about Donald Trump’s rambling answers when he was speaking at the Economic Club of New York and well, MSNBC’s Lawrence O’Donnell was even more astounded than I was – worth a watch!
