The human impact of COVID-19, Burmese Workers Camp, Phuket Town

I spent a day visiting and sharing food at Burmese workers camps in Phuket Town, Thailand at the end of May 2020. It was a very humbling experience and it unveiled the deep economic impact COVID19 has had on communities like this. The virus did not impact this community, the economic fall-out has. It’s been devastating.

My hosts for the day were Rebecca Lek, Chantal Fernandes and the fabulous Sister Lakana, of Good Shepherd Centre, Phuket Town. There are many amazing people in Phuket doing great work to help at the moment. They are all my heroes.

To help or donate to support Sister Lakana’s work, please go to the Website. Alternatively, you can donate in your country or region. There are so many people doing great work around the world. We must support the charities that are vital to helping communities world-wide survive.

We have no time to lose in addressing the global challenges humanity faces. More than 60 million people have fallen into extreme poverty because of COVID19, and the World Bank defines “extreme poverty” as living on less than $1.90 per person per day.

The World Food Program has told us 30 million are facing imminent famine. If you can, please donate to the World Food Program, or fund the amazing organizations – all over the world – doing the vital work of helping those in need right now.

Funding for global, regional and local charities has been significantly reduced everywhere because of COVID19. What this means is the people who need help the most are now at the greatest risk. Let’s refocus on ensuring that those most in need can get help. Share their stories. Donate. Offer your help.

Remember, until COVID19 is over everywhere, it’s not over anywhere. The longer it goes on, the more risk to communities like I’ve shared today. A second wave would be even more devastating than the first.

Please, let’s all do our part, because the impact on the poorest is ruinous.

A final very special thank you to Caleb Rozario and Andrew Psarianos of Picture Perfect Productions – 360videoasia.asia. You took my very imperfect video and wove it together to create a story. I am beyond grateful for your help.

Cheers to all and let’s open our hearts to help those who need it!
