Clown show

#282 Weekend Reads – the circus continues and cheaters have no shame

It’s a circus out there, so today, I’ll take you on a wild ride of what’s been going on around the world, and if you want, you can continue on the news page for more. It’s intense, and I’ve been tracking news for a really long time, so keep your sanity my friends.

Last week I talked about how I cope, so if you missed it, here it is. Remember, the arc of history is long, and we usually find our way, eventually.

Alright, let’s get into this news circus.

There was a Glacial Lake Outburst (GLOF) in Bhutan yesterday. No deaths reported, but these events will continue AND get worse.

Especially as there are more and more people AND infrastructure in the path of future GLOFs too – evidence A: Floods: Building boom in Nepal and India’s Uttarakhand puts 300,000 people in path of potential Himalayan disasters, study suggests.

Cheaters

The only people I’ve ever struggled with are people who cheat, especially if they are happy for anyone else to suffer for their own gain, and boy the cheaters have zero shame these days!

From Brazilian politics: Brazil Orders Election Interference Probe Into Vance Donor Network, Polymarket and Meta – MeidasTouch. Here’s another one: Federal Police Investigate Rockbridge/Meta Collusion with Bolsonaro Campaign.

To Israeli politics: Qatar rejects Israeli election interference claims as analyst questions Netanyahu’s motives. The shenanigans in Israel won’t be resolved for a while: Israel election result shows no overall majority as vote count complete | Israel Election 2026 News | Al Jazeera.

And then of course, the good ‘ol US of A. If the only way you can win is to cheat, it says everything.

  1. Trump’s election-denying strategy is back for the midterms | CNN Politics
  2. Judge imposes sweeping emergency order halting DOJ pressure campaign on election officials across the country | CNN Politics
  3. Fake polls expose vulnerabilities in US elections ahead of midterms | US Midterm Elections 2026 News | Al Jazeera

And check out this data, very comprehensive: The most corrupt presidency in American history, by the numbers.

BTW if you haven’t seen it, this legend took social media by storm this week! I talked to Tom, the viral ‘Jonestown’ Trump rally guy.

Planetary crisis

We’ve been enjoying some clean air in Singapore this week, but sad news out of Indonesia, where 3,560 people died in September, due to smoke pollution. A huge number were children.

As this Tweet elegantly explains, those culpable are who we should be directing our ire towards!

This coming El Niño is expected to kill nearly 900,000 people! Super El Nino could kill 870,000 people around the world, warn climate scientists | The Independent. I know it will be more, much more, and this doesn’t look beyond six months. We need to be looking at least 12 months ahead on this.

Phuket has been hit with devastating floods and landslides. I’d just like to add that ripping down forests on hills to build “luxury resorts and villas” is not a good idea: Phuket hit by another landslide as Patong mayor orders evacuations | Thai PBS World.

Europeans are preparing for a 3°C world. As if we’ll have much of a life in a world that hot… Europe must prepare for a 3°C warmer world, EU climate chief warns | Euronews.

The rich, as always, benefit either way: Super-rich get ‘double dividend’ from causes and costs of climate crisis, report finds | Climate crisis | The Guardian.

Yes, yes it is!! And it’s going to get much worse with AI in the mix: ‘Hybrid weapon of war’: Why climate disinformation could be a growing public health threat | Euronews.

In other news

We lost Sir Patrick Stewart this week, a great man of integrity and talent. We were lucky to have him: Sir Patrick Stewart obituary | Patrick Stewart | The Guardian.

A man who is the complete opposite of our Captain, Elon Musk said: “I had nothing to do with it” and then: “I did it” this week: Ukraine restores full satellite links for its drones | AP News. Zelensky and all of Ukraine must be completely and utterly exhausted. But one thing is clear, no private citizen should have the power Musk has, and the world needs to get on top of this and NOW!

We heard this news The Pentagon’s 90-Day Doomsday Plan Should Be Your Wake-Up Call – NaturalNews.com, as well as many other countries suggesting citizens should stock up with three days of non-perishable food. The social media world is going nuts on this topic, but if you can, best pay attention and stock up. I got a solar powered radio to add to my prepper stash this week. Important.

Cruise passengers were abandoned in Cambodia, due to fuel costs, but there’s so much more to this story: Luxury cruise passengers stranded in Cambodia due to soaring fuel costs.

We saw a terrible tragedy in Spain: Spain mourns after latest train tragedy kills 69 | The Straits Times. Last numbers were well into the 80s.

The biggest hack in Crypto history, apparently by the North Koreans: What to know about the $6.3B Binance hack | AP News.

AI and the whole tech industry saw massive falls in the stock market, timely just before the US mid-term election: US tech stocks see sharp falls as AI spending nears $1tn.

We’re already in “Word of the Year” territory, with Maxxing the choice for Dictionary.com: Maxxing selected as Dictionary.com word of the year.

And with that, I’ll leave you there. I’ve still got to get my head around a lot of other news, like what the hell is going on in Poland right now, but I’ll get to that after I finish this.

What can we do?

As always, if you want to actually do something, this is some of the action I’ve taken, a couple of tools to help people navigate these times.

First up is The Overshoot Challenge, which provides more than 300 ideas on the actions you can take to live in balance with our earth. It encourages you to start where you are, and build from there – The Overshoot Challenge: What Can I Do?

Also, I believe it’s important to understand the risks based on where you live, so you can get prepared. Preparation is vital – Where You Live – Your Polycrisis Risk Profile.
